Since it began operating in 1997, the See Forever Foundation's mission has been to create learning communities in lower income urban areas where all students, particularly those who have not succeeded in traditional schools, can succeed academically and socially. The Foundation operates the Maya Angelou Public Charter Schools in DC, as well as the Maya Angelou Academy at New Beginnings’ secure facility for committed youth in Laurel, MD. Our students develop the academic, social, and employment skills they need to build rewarding lives and promote positive change.

Position Overview

A substitute teacher is a professional educator who is responsible for managing a safe, orderly, and positive classroom environment while the regular teacher is absent. The substitute teacher must effectively manage the classroom and provide instruction for students, while following the regular teacher’s lesson plans and adhering to all school policies and procedures.

  • Provide meaningful instruction to students in assigned classrooms while regular teacher is absent.
  • Review and implement regular teacher’s routines, procedures, lesson plans, curriculum objectives, classroom management, and instructional strategies.
  • Establish and maintain a safe and orderly classroom environment; take all reasonable precautions to protect students, facilities, and materials.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively to students, faculty, and staff.
  • Report all student injuries, accidents, illnesses, and serious disciplinary problems to school administration as soon as possible.
  • Demonstrate cooperation and flexibility in performing other related duties as assigned by the school’s administration.


Ideal candidates will comprise the following:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Professional appearance
  • Previous substitute teaching experience preferred
  • Strong Math skills preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Experience working with young adults (ages 17-24)

Our rates are comparable to those of the District of Columbia Public Schools.
